From Andy Briggs in November 2008:

You might be interested to know that it was myself and staff member Joe Collerton who created your club in the year 1960, I believe it would be.

At that time the institution was Rutherford College of Technology. Very much Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.

Do you have any historical records of these early days.  It would be nice to contact some of these early members although Joe is still around living in Newcastle. His heart is and always will be close to the hills.

Your higher education establishment has had several titles over the years but its origins include that of Rutherford College of Technology during the 60's when i was a student there. There were no well established full-time students before about 1960.

At my suggestion we created the Mountaineering Club devoted to rock climbing although through the influence of Joe Collerton we embraced skiing also. One of our trips was to Glenmore (was it 1962 ?) when the chairlift opened the same week that NewYear.

A van load of us arrived at 7.00am on the eve of 1962 to camp in 2 feet of powder for two weeks, what a memorable holiday. see attachment. Some skied from the top of the White Lady to Glenmore campsite.  The supporting staff members included Frank Weeks and Gordon Davidson.

In 1966 Gordon , with Peter Lockey, set up the now well known LD Mountain Centre.  Gordon then went on to develop Berghaus equipment to his design and specifications.  It would be at this time I would have left Rutherford and move to Scotland. I can't say how long things continued afterward .................but it's great to know that the interest in that first venture continues. ...best wishes to your membership.
