Notes
:
Moderate route on craggy mountains so good navigation skills needed
particularly in poor visibility. Care needed on descent of Glas
Beinn Mhor to avoid steep
NNW slopes.
Ben Starav is an impressive mountain, its base reaching the
shores of Loch Etive, therefore it arises from sea level. The summit of Ben Starav lies at the intersection of five craggy ridges. The
longest ridge runs north then branches to enclose Coire
da Choimhid. The most usual
ascent is from the path to Coileitir onto the east
rim of Coire da Choimhid and up the north ridge to the summit. The only
other common route is from the col on the east ridge between Stob Coire Dhearg and Meall nan Tri Tighearnan.
This col is also an access route east-north-east to Glas Beainn Mhor
or south-south-east to Beinn Aighenan.
Glas Bheinn
Mhor is located between Stob
Gabhar and Stob Coir an Albannaich. It is a steep sided hill with a craggy north
face. A normal ascent is via the path from Coileitir
by the Allt nam Mheirleach to col between Beinn Starav and Meall nan
Tri Tighearan. An alternative is to follow the Allt Mheuran to the bealach between Glas Bheinn Mhor and Stob Coir an Albannaich. The
shortest ascents are from Glen Etive, but approaches
from Loch Tulla to the east are possible.
