TRIP LIST

Outac is Team Northumbria Mountaineering Club (formerly OUTdoor Activities Club, hence the name Outac).

We have a timetable of events starting in October with a weekend trip to some picturesque part of the British Isles every second weekend or so. We actually do far more hillwalking and trekking than mountaineering so don't be scared if you're not very fit or experienced! See Trip List for (unsurprisingly), a list of the trips.

We aim to give students of all ages, backgrounds and abilities the chance to experience the great outdoors. We aim to use experience from within and without the club to guide and instruct those of us eager to sample the activities on offer. It also gives students a chance for a break from the confines of the city and an opportunity to become at one with nature - or, more likely, to decide that nature is nasty, wet, windy and smelly and you wouldn't wish it on your landlord never mind your worst enemy.

On top of all this you will get to meet all the excellent, like minded and generally groovy people that are members of Outac and fall out with them at least once a week. Above all the emphasis is on having fun - nothing is compulsory - but the more you try, the more fun you'll probably have.

F.A.Q's

  • Can anybody join? Yep, anybody who's a member of Team Northumbria can join Outac.
  • What have we got planned for the year? We've got fifteen or so trips planned of which the first 10 or so will be the most popular, later in the year as exams loom, the trips will be more specialised.
  • Any social events? Loads of 'em.
  • How much do the trips cost? That will depend on which trip and how much the budget we are allocated from Sport Northumbria. Work on anything from £20 to £40 for a weekend's excellent entertainment.
  • Is it really roughing it? No! we try to make it as comfortable as possible! Most weekends we will be staying in a bunkhouse and most times some basic food will be provided. But see the details of each trip for more information.
  • Will the walks be too difficult for me? No we always split into an A and a B team and remember nothing is compulsory, we're out to have fun not to be heroes!
  • Any other membership perks? Yep, you get free membership of the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) and free use of Outac kit including sleeping bags, tents, ice axes, crampons, etc. You can also borrow the kit for your personal use providing it's not being used on an official Outac weekend at the time.

We were founded by Rutherford College, one of the predecessors of Northumbria University, in 1960 and as such we are probably the longest running club in the University.
