TRIP LIST

Isle of Rum - March. Scrambling and walking in one of the most imfamous island in Scotland! The minibus will hopefully be leaving early afternoon. We are staying in a bunkhouse which has no pub at all on the island.

  • Maps :
  • Travel : Its 300 miles and should take 6 hours 30 minutes followed by a ferry crossing.
  • Accommodation : In Kinloch Castle Hostel which is not near a pub. Outac star rating : *****
  • Routes : The Cuillin of Rum. This is an interesting one since so few people visit Rum, you can bullshit as much as you like about the seriousness of this route. You'll never meet anybody who's ever done it!
  • Kit : Rum has got to be the wettest place on planet Earth.

It may look small on the map but there is more than enough here to test a good hillwalker. Even Vikings were impressed, hence some of the mountain names e.g. Askival, Hellival, Trollival etc

TRIP LIST

Bought by the Nature Conservancy Council (now called Scottish Natural Heritage) in 1957, Rum is a sort of outdoor laboratory for the study of rocks, plants, birds and animals, and as such is well-protected from tourists by strict access rules. Visitors need to apply for permission (contact the Nature Reserve Office - telephone 01687 462 026 / fax: 01687 462 805) to camp and climb here on what has long been known as The Forbidden Isle.

Overlooking Loch Scresort, a sheltered bay halfway up the east coast where the ferry arrives, sits the reddish form of Kinloch Castle, an extravagant Edwardian dream, built by wealthy industrialist George Bullough in 1901. He had the stone shipped over from the Isle of Aran and paid the workmen extra to wear kilts. Apparently Edward VII stayed here and had an affair with the mistress of the house. The castle currently offers hostel accommodation in small dormitories and has a bistro offering meals. Guided tours also given daily (tel: 01687 462 037). Kinloch means 'at the head of the loch'. The Bullough family mausoleum can also be visited if you want to walk over to it on the other side of the island.

The island would be virtually uninhabited but for the SNH employees and volunteer conservationists. The island has a population of around 23 but SNH hopes to see this expand to about 50 over the next 10 years. There is a general store/post office.
